Statement from the Chair
Peter Wilkinson
Borough Market’s history is inextricably linked with that of London Bridge. A market had existed at the footings of the bridge since before the 12th Century. A Trust was established in 1756, with the purpose of securing the market’s long term future by providing the amenity and resources for the operation a fresh produce market on the current site.
The purpose of Borough Market was established to enrich food supplies to London’s local communities, then chronically suffering from a lack of fresh quality food produce. In 1997 Borough Market (Southwark) became a registered charity regulated under the provisions of the Charities Act 1993.
The Trust is today governed by a Board of Trustees whose public accountability is for the ethical governance of a financially viable and sustainable market. Borough Market is a free standing Charity, we draw no subsidy or grant funding from any Government, Local Authority or public funds.
London has grown into a world city and a vast multicultural metropolis. The world around us has also changed and mankind has impacted upon the planet’s environment and natural resources in ways that were unforeseen; and are only now just beginning to be understood.
The Borough Market Trust has committed itself to playing a leading role in the debate about food and its impact upon society and public health. We will uphold the quality of the market’s offer and its societal obligations through the provision of only those foods which meet our standards of nutrition, freshness and taste quality and demonstrate environmental sustainability in their production. We will ensure the market is a leader in executing its social responsibilities relating to working conditions, social equality, animal welfare, and accessibility to the broadest cross section of London’s communities.
I aim to ensure that Borough Market discharges its charitable obligations for the benefit of our local community, engaging in food education and providing an urban space for exciting and community enriching events.
Our terrific Management team are committed to ensuring the Market is operationally best in class but also a wonderful urban place for customers to discover and enjoy.
The Market should always reflect its origins as a vibrant hub in the community where affordable quality food was made available to London’s people whilst embracing a bright future at the very heart of a City that never stands still.
I want all who live near and around this Market to find it as welcoming and accessible to them as it is to our throng of loyal and highly valued regular shoppers.
I am proud to be Chairman of the Borough Market Trust.
Peter Wilkinson
