Borough Market’s publication named Customer Magazine of the Year for the second time
Borough Market’s Market Life magazine has been named Customer Magazine of the Year by the Professional Publishers Association (PPA) for the second year in a row. At the PPA Independent Publisher Awards, which celebrate the achievements of smaller (and, we’d like to think, more creative and interesting) magazine and digital content publishers, Market Life was singled out for its “impressive stats”, for delivering on its objective of “engaging customers more deeply with Borough Market” and for being “a real part of the community”. In addition, its editor, Mark Riddaway, was given a Highly Commended award for his work on the magazine.
Over the course of 2017, Market Life has been redesigned from its old broadsheet format to a size more conducive to reading in the Market’s restaurants, cafes and public spaces. It has hosted regular columns from a stable of amazing food writers, including Ed Smith, Rosie Birkett, Sybil Kapoor, Jane Parkinson and Dan Tapper, and featured recipe spreads from a diverse range of highly talented cooks: Emily Watkins, Ursula Ferrigno, Tim Maddams, Zoe Adjonyoh, Felicity Cloake, Saliha Mahmood Ahmed. It has taken our writers to farms in Wales, Kent and Lincolnshire and seen them interview some of the most influential people in food today: campaigning New York chef Dan Barber, cocktail king Tony Conigliaro, Magic Breakfast founder Carmel McConnell.
A total of 84,000 copies have been printed, all on fully-recycled paper, and distributed at the Market, London Bridge station and Liverpool Street station. Just over 74 per cent of readers surveyed in September said they had been inspired to buy an ingredient based on what they read.
Look out for plenty more of the same in 2018.
