Market granted WUWM silver award by for excellence in promoting healthy eating
Borough Market has been granted a silver award by the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) for excellence in activities promoting healthy eating. WUWM promotes both retail and wholesale markets all around the globe, and its awards are keenly contested, so this is an accolade of which the Market is extremely proud.
The promotion of better, healthier, more balanced approach to eating is central to Borough Market entire philosophy. With the wider British food culture currently dominated by industrialised production and large-scale corporate retailers, obesity and the illnesses associated with it are on the rise. Food poverty is also a major problem, with the poorest social groups lacking access to fresh ingredients and the facilities and knowledge required to get the best from them.
Available to everyone
As a food market in the heart of inner-city London, run by a charitable trust, Borough Market is committed to doing everything it can to promote the benefits of a healthy diet and ensure that those benefits are available to everyone, regardless of age or background.
But rather than encouraging faddish diets, the Market promotes an approach rooted in the simple pleasures of enjoying good food. It believes that a healthy way of eating is one based around balanced, home-cooked meals, made using high quality seasonal ingredients that have been produced using traditional low-intensity methods. This is a philosophy that values moderation rather than self-denial; eating plenty of fruit, veg and wholegrains is encouraged, but the consumption of a cake should not be a source of guilt or worry.
The Market’s strategy for promoting healthy eating has three prongs:
—provide access to a broad range of fresh, seasonal produce and high quality products, the source and ingredients of which are known and understood by the people selling them.
—use free cooking demonstrations, educational programmes and events to provide encouragement and advice for home cooks of all ages and backgrounds.
—promote the benefits of its philosophy of healthy eating through magazine articles, web content, social media and public debates.
“Borough Market’s entire operation is built on the belief that for people to eat healthily, they require access to fresh, seasonal ingredients of the highest possible quality, and the knowledge needed to get the best out of them,” said Darren Henaghan, Borough Market’s managing director. “We work hard to provide both: a careful balance of stalls and shops selling good food, much of which has been grown, reared, caught or made by the people who sell it, supported by a comprehensive programme of education, communication and public engagement, designed to encourage people to make and eat meals that are both nutritious and tasty. To be recognised in this way by our peers at the WUWM is a tribute to the impressive work that is being done by the Market’s traders, staff, chefs and contributors to help our customers live healthier, happier lives.”
