All The Bells
On Friday 27th July, the Olympics will officially kick off in London and to celebrate this amazing event coming to the city, a country-wide event is taking place. At 8.12am, thousands of people across the UK will join together to ring bells and welcome the Games.
“All The Bells” by Turner Prize winner Martin Creed is part of the Cultural Olympiad and at the Market, we’ve signed up to take part! We’re inviting traders and customers to join us and the rest of the UK to ring as many bells as possible for three minutes.
The event taps into the Market’s history, where traditionally a bell was rung to mark the beginning of the day’s trading. Grab a bell and join us on your way to work to take part – it can be a bike bell, a mobile phone or a huge gong if you have one handy! You’ll be ringing alongside members of the Borough Market Choir and the Blackfriars Settlement singing group, the Nightingales; while our pubs, The Globe and The Rake, will be ringing their bells too.
Traders including Bread Ahead and Flat Cap Coffee will be on hand ready to serve you tasty croissants, baked goods and coffee for breakfast. The day also marks the first time in our long history that we’ll be open seven days a week so join us under the railway arches of the Green Market to ring in the Games!
